Chemistry students engage in research through Â鶹ÊÓƵ lab's NSF C-CAS affiliation

Like many college students, Â鶹ÊÓƵ senior Lilianna Kocai and junior Genevieve Insalaca have spent their summer surrounded by a buzzing cohort of friends – without leaving campus. The two chemistry students have spent the summer synthesizing fluorescent compounds and running computer-assisted simulations in the laboratory of Â鶹ÊÓƵ Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry Carl Saint-Louis. Their work is part of an innovative program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that involves computer-assisted programming as another method of experimentation.

Mosquito research draws Â鶹ÊÓƵ environmental science major to the woods for the summer

Â鶹ÊÓƵ senior Brooklyn Galvan has found a happy place for the summer – in the mosquito-infested woods near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The environmental science major is conducting research into mosquitoes as pollinators as part of the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates for Gulf Coastal Plains Ecology. The experience builds on Galvan’s experience researching the importance of mosquitoes to the ecosystem in the lab of Â鶹ÊÓƵ Assistant Professor of Microbiology Andrew Haddow.

Physics student enriches knowledge at National High Magnetic Field Laboratory

Â鶹ÊÓƵ physics student Matt Bonvissuto has taken what he has learned on campus to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida, on a Research Experiences for Undergraduates project funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Â鶹ÊÓƵ master's graduates benefit from NIH-funded bridge program

Recent Â鶹ÊÓƵ graduate April Ford engaged in a program designed to help master’s students in the College of Science and Mathematics gain the experience they needed to pursue doctoral degrees elsewhere. She’ll stand as an example of the Peach State Bridges to the Doctorate program’s effectiveness, having earned her Master of Science in Integrative Biology (MSIB) and acceptance into a Ph.D. program. Ford, Jojo Croffie, and Lindsey Knight all earned their MSIB degrees, and thanks to enrichment through the Peach State Bridges to the Doctorate program, each will start a Ph.D. in the fall.

Friendship fuels research success for Â鶹ÊÓƵ science students

Cecilia Le and Lily Schwartz have bonded over boba tea and chemistry research, but not necessarily in that order. The Â鶹ÊÓƵ juniors met in the lab of Associate Professor of Biochemistry Mohammad Halim, and a partnership flourished – as did a friendship. They presented research into the effectiveness of certain peptides in mitigating COVID-19 twice at the Symposium of Student Scholars, and have continued to make their way as undergraduate researchers.

Non-traditional student, Navy veteran finds research home at Kennesaw State

Rusty Hooper traded nuclear submarines for the study of physical chemistry at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. An undergraduate researcher in the laboratory of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Madalynn Marshall, Hooper enrolled at Kennesaw State for its proximity to his home in Dallas, Ga., but quickly found his way to the College of Science and Mathematics and its lab complex.

Carl Saint-Louis named 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor

Each year Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Office of Undergraduate Research awards one faculty member the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award. To be chosen, a mentor must have shown not only passion for research but also extraordinary dedication to their students. This year’s outstanding undergraduate research mentor award winner is Carl Saint-Louis, an assistant professor of organic chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics.
